New Faster, Sleeker iPhone 3G Announced!

So, Apple announced the new iPhone 3G at the WWDC in San Francisco on Monday. As expected, the phone will take advantage of the faster 3G data network. However, I don't think the changes are enough for most iPhone users to wanna upgrade. Things that will available in the new phone that weren't in the old phone:

  • Plastic back cover in black or white
  • Faster 3G network network capability
  • Built-in GPS
  • 2-year contract required with AT&T
  • $199 for 8GB; $299 for 16GB

Some features that many people wanted but is not available in the new iPhone:

  • Video camera
  • Cut and paste
  • Voice dialing (Come on, apple! My 3-year old Cingular 3195? had this)
  • Video conferencing
  • SMS
  • Stereo Bluetooth compatibility

Things in the new iPhone 2.0 software upgrade that will be available to both the new and old iPhone:

  • 3rd party applications (games, productivity, etc) you can download from the new Apps Store
  • Ability to work with Exchange
  • Push messaging
  • ActiveSync capability
  • Better encryption and other security features
  • Remote lock or kill of lost/stolen phones
  • More (I know there's more, but I can't think of them right now)

I was hoping for a lot in the iPhone 3G. But seeing that many of the features are going to be available in the software update, I think I'll keep my original iPhone. I'll get most of the new functionalities when I get the free software update and I won't have to be tied down to a 2-year contract with AT&T, along with a higher data plan. Sure 3G speed would be nice, but not at $10 more per month!

Also, there are a bunch of iPhone look-alikes coming out in the market, the the Spring/Samsung Instinct. But some of them cost more than the new iPhone 3G and they still don't work as good as the iPhone.

Wait to Upgrade iPhone 2.0 Firmware

If you're anxious to upgrade your original iPhone to the iPhone 2.0 software, please wait for a few days. The software was released earlier this morning and an onslaught of users tried to upgrade, causing the Apple server to crash. If the server crashes in the middle of your upgrade, you will end up with a useless iPhone. Granted, that may be an excuse to go out and buy the new iPhone 3G, but I hear that AT&T is having problems with the activation process with that as well due to the high volume.
