Introduction: “Piu Yaangh Jiex Koiv” can be translated into English as the “Sailing Across The Sea”. It is a story passed down by legend about the Iu-Mien’s migration from northern China to present day Guangdong Province. In the story, the entire twelve clans of Iu-Mien had built twelve giant rafts to sail across the Changjiang River. The destination was the southeastern part of China. A violent storm blew all the rafts into the open sea and their rafts remained in the sea for three long months. They had pleaded to the gods of Three Temples to save them. In return the Iu-Mien promised to offer the gods with animals and worship them. Their vows were answered and their rafts miraculously reached Guangdong and all were safe. Ever since, the paying of vow becomes an Iu-Mien ritual. Even though this song is titled Sailing Across The Sea, actually, it is an Iu-Mien history in brief.
