Project Overview:
Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership (AYPAL) promotes youth activism among Oakland’s API communities. AYPAL is a collaborative project of five agencies serving API youth in five ethnic and neighborhood based sites. The two open positions are for the youth sites based in the Oakland Cambodian and Mien communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Act as advisor and supervisor to a Leadership Team with 6 youth interns.
Work with Leadership Team to recruit 30-50 youth to form a community based Youth Leadership Organization (YLO).
Act as advisor and ensure positive group dynamics for the YLO that meets at least once per week.
Help train youth interns and YLO members in leadership, community organizing and political analysis skills.
Work with the YLO, the Leadership Team, the Co-Directors and the Executive Director to select, plan and implement one youth-led community campaign per year.
Work with the YLO, the Leadership Team, and the Program Director to participate in 5-6 hands-on youth arts project per year.
Work with the Leadership Teams of other YLOs to explore collaborative opportunities on the community campaigns and arts projects.
Supervise 1 or 2 hourly staff who are mentors to the youth
Play a lead role in collaborating with Alameda County systems of care (e.g. Probation, CPS, etc.) to recruit harder to reach youth to be involved in program
Document and keep accurate records of participation for each individual member of the YLO.
Be available at youth center on certain days for when youth drop by
Qualifications:
Experience in youth development and/or youth organizing
Experience with membership recruitment and retention
Demonstrated involvement with API community in Oakland
Demonstrated supervisory experience
Experience (volunteer or paid) working with API youth and knowledge of their issues
Commitment to the empowerment of historically underrepresented constituents, including young people, people of color, poor people, immigrants and refugees, women and LGBT communities
Good administrative skills
Able to work flexible hours (some Saturdays and evenings)
Good oral and written communications skills with youth and adults
Understanding of principles of community organizing
Bilingual and bicultural in English and Khmer, or another API language/culture a plus, but not required
Must have valid California driver’s license, $100,000/$300,000 insurance coverage and access to a car
