What do you like/dislike about IUMIEN.COM?

I like the fact that I can come in here and post/share inspirational quotes/poetrys, to read other people's thoughts and post and most importantly to learn how to write in mien. Not to mention, to stay in touch with family and friends.

I dislike the verbal attacks, negativity (thoughts and post). But I guess everyone is entitle to their opinions to a certain extent. Other than that I have no complaints. It's just really hard to trust anyone in here. You just don't know who is really who. But hey it's just internet right?

I def. did not post that twice or maybe I did. Yeah, I think some of the technical issues needa be fixed...

but other than that it has provided me with many info about the Mien background and linked to many sites devoted towards the Mien people and I really love the events postings. Before this site I never really knew there were any Mien events going on at all. It seems that a lot of the complaints come from the message boards and some technical issues, as I had problems posting up this message. I personally don't really read the message boards, especially if it's just a casual conversation, I read more of the informative stuff on here. I guess maybe have filters or maybe have the members penalized or suspended for posting offensive messages. I also heard people saying this site looks boring, but I'm fine with it because I know how hard it can be to manage a site and that it can also be expensive. Perhaps maybe more pictures throughout the site and keeping the gallery and video section updated would be great, but I don't think it needs any fancy flash graphics or videos. I suppose it is more important at this time to maybe monitor the content that gets posted and make the site more user friendly and then if possible focus on the looks. Closing down this site is just a bad idea as some of the people above suggested, it will pretty much make the Mien communities more isolated and the younger people would probably feel more cultureless. I really appreciate that you guys provide a site for us Mien people to come together and that you guys are putting in your own time and efforts to support us. It is far much better to have something, as opposed to nothing.

Just a thought.

For Our Security & For Safety Reasons:
I think that our Community Events and Schedules should only be viewed by our members, login is required.
As of right now, any stranger can come in here and see all the detailed infos { i.e. info of any event, its location, date & time, etc.}

I agree with you Tommy Phan, we should have potluck or picnic together at least once a year.

WHAT I LIKE: ...able to read & write different languages in here. Other Mien sites I went to can only write in English.

WHAT I DON"T LIKE: ... seeing fewer and fewer Mien folks/members in here/online than it used to be...

HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?: I don't know... throw a 'members only' gathering picnic [potluck]?

My only dislike is that people's screen names sometimes just kills me man! =] I swear I see screen names that are close to my pass word or reflects upon me. Where do people come up with these sn's? "shaking head".... I AM PJK butthead! Get that Straight!!!!!!! And I am not going to change my SN for this matter of fact!!!!!!!!! Other than that Great job Gauv! Keep up the good work! You've given the mien community a chance to come in and disguise themselves and get creative. Have fun everyone. You can learn alot from this site! I mean ALOT!

i think you have a very nice web site here, a lot of people don't know how much time it take to keep a web site up, running, and updated. i think you done a great job, keep it up webmaster. one improvement i think would be even better for this site is to open a chat room for some of the people that want to meet and chat instead of posting in the forum and waiting for a reply. again great job, keep it up.

can you guys bring back the screen names again? atleast that way we could all send private messages to each other again and we'll know whose online. that was one of the best feature that i liked about iumien.com.

That slick reply box is unfortunately not compatible with IE 7 (about 15% of our users use it). So I had to revert back to the old reply box.

Whether you choose the flat or threaded view, you still have the option of viewing comments in chronological (oldest comments on top) or reverse chrono order (newset comments on top). Play around with the viewing options found at the beginnig of the comments section above. I believe your preferences are saved in a cookie.

Reply box...with that, I think we're now officially using 5.5% of what the CMS is capable of. :)

Slick new reply box, Gauv! With your old system, the replies are tacked onto a comment and ordered chronologically. That made it easy to follow conversations. With this new system, the latest comments aren't at the top. Going "flat" will get you lost because the replies aren't attached to a previous comment. Hmmm... I guess I just have to get used to reading more =)

BTW, i just selected flat comments and viewed the comments to one of the events and immediately got lost as to who was responding to whom. There are times when flat comments are useful and there are times when threaded comments are useful.

When people go on tangents in a threaded system, all the replies to each tangent or subtopic are grouped together. I think that is helpful in following the various subtopics or conversations. Unfortunately, as you have experienced, this means that if someone replies to an old topic, their reply will be grouped with that old subtopic on nth page.

In a flat system, all replies are listed in chronological or reverse chrono order. That is helpful for finding the latest comment and works best for someone who frequents the site and are aware of most of the comments and subtopics. Unfortunately, if you haven't been to the site for a while and you can easily get lost when the most recent comment is a reply to another comment that is 30 days old and buried on the nth page of comments. In a flat system, if you want to know what that most recent comment is a response to, you'll have to read through all n pages of comments to find the original comment.

At any rate, I believe the solution is to allow users to chose whether to view comments threaded or flat. Thank you for reminding me about this. I first allowed readers to choose and thought I'd test out threaded only view. I think its time that we allow readers to choose again.

I've weighed the pros and cons of a threaded commenting system considerably and decided that a threaded system is most practical because the users of iumien.com often go on tangents... I'll finish this later...battery is dying...

Hey Gauv, I don't like how the replies to another comment aren't at the top of the page. Instead, they're tacked onto the original comment which could be 5 pages deep into the topic.
